Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 conquers Car and Driver’s Lightning Lap

The Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 was born to smash lap records and top timing charts. At Car and Driver’s annual Lightning Lap shootout, the Corvette ZR1 did just that, setting the fastest lap in the history of the test.

The ZR1 posted a time of 2:34.2 on Virginia International Raceway’s (VIR) 4.1-mile Grand Course, topping the charts at the 2026 edition of Car and Driver’s Lightning Lap and conquering some of the fastest production cars on earth along the way.

Of course, the Corvette ZR1 has already proved its vast capabilities at VIR. With General Motors driver Aaron Link at the wheel, the Corvette ZR1 snatched VIR’s Grand Course production car lap record last year. In addition to its VIR Grand Course record, the Corvette ZR1 owns the production-car record at three other historic American tracks – Watkins Glen’s Long Course, Road America, and Road Atlanta. The ZR1 even doubled down at VIR, posting a production record of 1:47.7 on the track’s “Full Course” configuration.

Link was on hand as Car and Driver worked toward their chart-topping run. “When developing a Corvette, VIR is a benchmarking and validation tool for our team because it offers challenges many other tracks across the US can’t match. Once I set our lap times at VIR, our team waited with anticipation for the Lightning Lap invitation. We’re thrilled that K.C. Colwell laid down the fastest lap in Lightning Lap history in a Corvette ZR1. It’s a testament to what the GM team is capable of.”

At its annual Lightning Lap shootout, now in its 19th year, Car and Driver’s editors convene to pit the year’s newest and hottest production cars against the demanding curves of VIR’s Grand Course. This year, the Corvette ZR1 came out on top, outpacing a varied field of more than a dozen cars, cementing the car’s legacy among the test’s many historic competitors.

Powered by a twin-turbocharged 5.5-liter flat-plane crank V8 – the most powerful engine ever offered in a production Corvette – the ZR1 with ZTK Performance Package sprints to 60 mph in 2.3 seconds and the quarter mile in just 9.6 seconds1. A quarter-mile trap speed of 150 mph1 doesn’t hurt either.

But vanquishing the competition at VIR requires more than just horses. The road course challenges every car with a series of harrowing, high-speed esses, and more than a few tricky low-speed moments. Standard carbon-ceramic brakes help rein in speed after VIR’s lengthy straights and an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission rounds out the ZR1’s on-track bonafides.

With its advanced aerodynamics and deftly tuned handling, the ZR1 rivals the world’s most elite supercars.
And in the case of Car and Driver’s Lightning Lap 2026, it can conquer them too.
